Documentary Evaluation

evaluation sheet

Original Ideas: My first idea was to do a poetic styled documentary because i liked the idea of a message such as the time or rain and it was always involved in the video some what but not constantly. It is like a subtext since the visuals show different locations, sights and even a different message sometimes but underneath that it is a message of time and rain.

My final idea is an observational documentary which would be in my local Saturday market and it will show the market and surroundings and the crowds and performers. It will also have music in the background and time lapses as an observation of the market. I did also plan to include interviews but when i was filming the camera was low battery.

Development process: During creating the idea i was thinking of similar ideas that went with videos i had seen online. I saw an observational of a haircut video on youtube and a Times Square observational video and then adapted onto that and tried to see whats accessible for me. The wells Somerset market was an ideal situation for the observational idea. Therefore I came up with the idea of taking the crowds shots from the times square one and try to incorporate it into my documentary of the crowds. I also wanted to incorporate some signs zoom in and zoom outs.
With meetings i would’ve needed to ask for permission to film but because its a public event i didn’t get a reply from the email and i went down and filmed and was allowed to film without meeting anyone.
With the research i had researched some history, some images of the location and i needed to research the weathers on the days which was a bit mixed feelings since i planned for film 2 days but one day was raining bad weather.
I also had to research similar videos to get ideas for myself to adapt on the documentary ideas.

I didn’t really have a solid plan,. It was to get up early and film the stalls being set up and stay late to see them get taken down but due to weather and battery on the camera it wasn’t possible.

I wished i had another battery to film interviews and more angles and more location filming.

Communication: I did email the council that hosted the wells marketplace but did not get a reply; i asked for permission to film due to the fact i wasn’t sure if i was allowed to film, but they did not reply and i assume it is because more tourists and public people take pictures and film when they want to so it is a public area to film.

I did ask some people if i was allowed to film them and i got a few agreements and disagreements but i recorded a performer who was very nice and loved to be recorded.

Technical Skills: With these, i learnt how to film zoomed in and focusing on an area on a canon camera; for example when i interview someone i would know how to blur the background to make it look better.

i also learnt how to use the wireless microphones and how to attach it to someone and the camera.

with the editing i have not got the footage i planned to get. I got most that i wanted but i did not get to interview anyone but i got a lot of angles and it did work out in my edit

Effectiveness of your outcomes: I think in my opinion i did well with my edit but could have added an interview involved. I planned to add a voice over with history of the location and about the artist of the sculpture on one cathedral aswell as the history of multiple landmarks around the area.

Audience: I first figured out the identity of my audience due to the fact that people who go to the market are usually locals and people who live their who are old or in the older ages, It was also introduced and people take pictures and post it on facebook for tourists so for newly explorers and resigned.

I did not need to categorize my audience since it was a more of a general age group around the resigned maybe 50+ Although you do get adults around 40 going around the market place. Not as much though. Also the explorers i cant really categorize because it is more of a general again. If i had to say an age group id say 35-50+
With the gender it would be female and male since in my experience i have noticed old couples who are female and male.

the camera angles for the audience would be quite far back or zoomed into landmarks so the tourists can see the overall location look and how it is laid out etc and can also see a nice scene for the main points of the city or well known areas for the tourists.

Learning: i documented my learning process and research and in my WordPress.

i have recently updated it my progression journal on the WordPress menu.

I have also noted down research that i have made in WordPress and also from the local Wells website.

I have learnt how to use a camera for interviews and more about lighting. For example i know that on a camera you can blur the background for interview and that mise en scene is important and how to represents the person and the location. You would want the background to be neat and tidy for a professional look and good even lighting all around. I unfortunately did not get to show this in my documentary as i did not have enough battery on the day for the interviews and then aswell the next day i planned to record it was raining terribly.

A way i have applied my learning to my documentary is i have learnt how to blur it while recording and how important it can be for some angles and perspectives to give the audience more of a range of views. I have also learnt that the music is very important and that the editing has to go along with the music as well for nice flowing pattern.

I can also safely say that i have included animation into my documentary which i have recently learned how to. We did do animation lessons with Adrian and Mikki. I would of added more throughout the documentary but it was more for information on land marks and pictures to give the viewer more understanding. With this said i did use Adobe premiere pro to include the animation but would love to use adobe after effects when i have more time for my future projects.

I applied my strengths by being able to adapt to a bad situation. For example i did not have an interview or voice over. I had plans to make an interview and started to not have enough footage for an edit itself as it would’ve only been able to reach 2 minutes with the footage i started off with. I took the time out of my day and free time to get more footage and planned out how i would make it longer by going with the music.

For my next project or for what i would do differently. I would make more of a secured time managed plan and do interviews and voice overs first as they seem to be the hard part.

I would also include more animation and give myself more time by being more organised.
